Progress & Perfectionism

I would like to avoid only writing my completely-biased, admittedly-opinionated reviews of the games I play. Hell, I'd even like to update more often than just on Wednesdays; but for now, that's what you're getting, seeing as how I'm in an extremely lazy mood, and could care less. No, really. I love you all. I swear.

Ahem.

What I will do, though, is at least give little insights as to what I've been up to, in between reviews. Something is better than nothing, as they say. They... do say that, right? Hrm.

I suffer from being a perfectionist, and would probably be diagnosed with severe OCD if I decided to actually tell my doctor about my anal tendencies (rimshot!). As a result, I find it necessary to do everything I can in a game, find nearly every item (if not every item), complete every side quest and objective, and plan out my progression in advance. Why? Because I'm probably legally insane, or simply OCD... or maybe it's something else. Hmm. Moving on.

Where I'm going with this is that I tend to take an exorbitant amount of time completing games, and it usually takes me twice, if not three times the amount of time that it would a normal gamer to complete them (and yes, I keep this in mind when listing game completion time in my reviews). I'm not really going to apologize for doing that, 'cause it's just what I do. Who knows, maybe someone will find it inspiring, or maybe even informative... more than likely, simply a form of amusement; but it's what I do, yo. I do want to make it clear, though, so if anyone happens to be interested in knowing about my gameplay in illustrious detail, I'm in the terrible habit of keeping track of nearly everything.

... and I do mean nearly everything.

From stats, to personal strategies, to whatever else I end up thinking of. I keep all of this seemingly useless information in the form of Google docs (I really do love you guys, Google) so anyone who wishes to peek at the stuff can feel free and do so in real-time. Oooh, fancy.

If I'm playing a game that I'm working toward completing, it's likely that I'll have a "game data" document and will be updating it as I play the game. I'll almost always link to these Google docs both on the "game schedule" sidebar and in my "game completion" doc (didja call that one?). My data won't be perfect, nor will it be necessarily complete, but it'll be there. I have an entire folder dedicated to storing this stuff, so if you'd ever like to browse through, you're more than welcome to. Not like you'd want to, but... it's there, if you do -- and if you do, sweet. I feel special, now.

With that out of the way, I can tell you that I'm making progress on my playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics, which I'm about 50 hours into, and am at the beginning of the final chapter -- and I'm still relatively early into Dragon Quest IX, which will more than likely end up being an long-term, ongoing game, seeing as how it promises endless gameplay after the story mode is completed. I'll surely spend hours upon hours maxing out my characters and working toward 100% completion, even though that's near-impossible with how much content the game offers. Also, simultaneously, I've been playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, and haven't made too much progress due to being hopelessly addicted to leveling several characters and playing several time-consuming games at once. Fail.

Sure would've been nice to have gotten into the Japanese Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta... but then again, that would've slowed down my snails-pace of a progress even further. More fail.

... but it's PSO2. Who am I kidding? THE WORLD STOPS FOR PSO2, I tell you. STOPS!!!

Fanboygasm complete. Games... incomplete. And quite so. I'll... keep working on that. Yeah. Tomorrow.

Long Time No See!

Indeed, it's been nearly a year since I've made an update... meaning that my "beat a game every week for a year" resolution was an epic failure. Go me, eh?

Stuff happened, I moved to northern Virginia, and got caught up with life, resulting in the complete neglection of my "gaming schedule" and writing regularly.

So I apologize for the ridiculous hiatus, and admit defeat. However, that doesn't mean I'm hanging this blog up to dry, oh no, no, no. In fact, I've completely updated this blog, from its general "look" (I'm not too keen on the super-fancy, animation templates that Blogger provides, though, sorry) to its individual posts (I've implemented a more analytical scoring method for my reviews), and even have a new "purpose" in mind.

As I mentioned before, I moved to live with my boyfriend of nearly three years, Brad aka "Damo", although it is temporary; we'll be moving back to the middle Tennessee area as soon as he's done with his four years of service as a US Marine. Living with someone is a prime opportunity to truly get to know someone, and, despite knowing that Brad is quite the anime-loving, video game-playing guy I fell in love with, there's some things I simply didn't know...

The best RPGs ever released (in my opinion) -- the "classics", as many refer to them -- are largely unknown to Brad.

I know, right?! I couldn't even believe it, myself. Never having played Chrono Trigger? Never having heard of the masterpiece that is EarthBound, or spending hours upon hours customizing a massive army of characters in Final Fantasy Tactics?

I refuse to allow Brad to go on without experiencing what I believe are games that should not be passed up by anyone who thinks of themselves as a "gamer". So... why not do a bit of encouraging?

Indeed, the new purpose for my blog presented itself to me like a ethereal epitome:. I'm going to continue to play (and re-play, in many cases) games, mostly RPGs, and do so with Brad at my side, in order to share with him what he's been missing out on for all of these years; and I'm going to share the experiences (and potentially frustrations) of doing so with all of you -- sans the crazy game-a-week plan that I had given myself, before. This time, I'm simply going to adhere to a "play-as-I-please" schedule, and I'll make sure to post a minimum of once a week, every Wednesday.

So, for those of you who, like Brad, never felt like playing through Chrono Trigger (seriously, why haven't you...?), for those of you who've never been able to find a copy of EarthBound, and for those of you who simply don't have the motivation, time or patience to play through some of the best games of all time, I will.

I'm going to continue to play through games and write about them for Brad, for all of you, and for myself. Games, particularly role-playing ones, are truly amazing experiences, and hopefully I will be able share that passion, or even ignite a new one, for anyone who wishes to pay my geeky ramblings any attention.

You're welcome to follow me on Twitter or subscribe via RSS to keep up with me and my blog posts.

Thanks to those of you who're still following this blog after nearly a year-long hiatus, and for your support of my gaming obsession (er... passion! PASSION!!!) and my desire to chronicle my experiences in a blog. I'll be posting again soon about the games I'm currently playing! Game on, everyone!

Groovin' with Dance Central

For my 2nd game of 2011, I have been working on Dance Central for the 360 Kinect. As the first Kinect peripheral title I've delved into, I'm incredibly impressed and I'm really enjoying this game.

A few entries back, I made a post comparing Dance Central to DanceMasters, which is Konami's version of a Kinect-based dancing game, and I'm still actively working toward completing this game and getting all of the achievements (requiring surprising amount of work, actually!), so I'm not going to post my complete review and impressions of the game until sometime this weekend.

I did want to go ahead and see if there were any suggestions for what my next game should be, so if you have any ideas, check out my game library and comment with any ideas you have! Thanks, guys!

Castlevania HD: Chapter 8

I managed to get the last achievement, so this game has been officially completed by me. Whoo!

On another note, Konami released the DLC Chapter 8 level today, "The One Who Is Many", based on the underground area of Symphony of the Night... so of course, it features Legion as the boss of this level.

According to the Castlevania HD wiki, three more levels are in the works and all are supposedly going to be released during the month of January, ultimately bringing the total number of levels up to 11. Also, the prices for these levels are cheaper than the 400-point Chapter 7 -- Chapter 8 is just 320, and the following are scheduled to be 320, 240, and 240, respectively. There's still no word on when Simon Belmont is going to be released, but also according to the wiki, Hammer is no longer an officially-confirmed upcoming character, although Getsu Fuma has been confirmed.

The Plan For '11

I've most certainly been neglecting keeping this updated, partly because I've been grinding away at the gPotato free-to-play MMORPG Aika Online, and partly because I've been trying to decide what I'm going to do with this blog, exactly.

I've finally decided that at the turn of the new year, I'm going to start work on a year-long excursion to beat a game a week for the duration of 2011. That's a total of 52 games. Crazy, I know... but eh, it'll be fun. If I end up falling a bit behind, I'll try to catch up by completing more than one game in a single week; or I might even end up beating multiple games in a week. Regardless, my goal will be to complete at least fifty-two games next year. While I'm working toward this ridiculous goal, of course, I'll be posting here to chronicle my journey, and hopefully you all will join me for the ride.

If anyone has any suggestions of what games I ought to include in my ridiculous endeavor for 2011, PLEASE let me know! I'm rather indecisive, so I'll need all of the help I can get! Naturally, try to suggest games that I already own, can easily pick up or can emulate (NES, SNES, etc.) -- I have a library of all of the current games I own on my Raptr account, and I have a list of the games I'm planning on playing listed in my Game Completion Googledoc.

With that said, I probably won't be posting too much until 2011... but I promise that there will be a steady stream of delicious rant-y goodness from my odd self, and hopefully it will be just as amusing for you to read as it will be for me to write about.

Until next time, game on, brothas and sistahs.

Progress

I've been playing games a bit more regularly, and I'm certainly making a bit of progress, although not nearly as much as I'd like to. I completed all of the achievements for Boom Boom Rocket on XBLA, about half of the achievements for Civilization V on Steam, completely mastered my first character in Castlevania HD (XBLA), and I've been working intermittently on various other Xbox LIVE Arcade games to increase my GamerScore, which is now sitting at 1060. I guess that's not too bad for only having the 360 for two months or so, right?

There's lots going on in my life, right now, trying to get it all sorted out... so although I don't have as much time for games as I'd like, I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze in more time once I'm back on track. I'm moving soon, and hopefully I'll have a full-time job, as well, so huzzah. Wish me luck. :D

Distractions

Surprisingly enough... I haven't really been playing games, lately.

I know, right? It's almost as surprising as would be me dating a female. (Ba-dum tish?)

Seriously, though. I haven't been gaming. Dragon Warrior VII has been idling in my PS2 since I picked up Super Street Fighter IV, and I haven't played that after realizing how absolutely horrid the Xbox 360 controller d-pad is for fighters.

Instead, I've been distracted by episodes of The Office, which I have been watching thanks to my boyfriend giving me access to his Netflix account. I'm hooked... currently on episode 16, season 3.

Aren't I a piece of work? Not only am I not motivated to get myself a job and actually be productive... I'm also not even motivated to play video games.

... what the hell is wrong with me?

The Beginning

Well, here it is. The start of a silly idea I had to make a gaming blog has finally come to be, albeit rather plain and simple, at the moment. I'll worry about cosmetics later, I suppose.

Anyhoo, the idea is for me to blog about my gaming experiences and opinions, whether bitchy, insightful, or just plain pointless. It's also to encourage myself to fulfill the goal of completing a massive list of games I made as a resolution back in 2007. Yeah, yeah... that sounds rather ridiculous, I know. But hey, some people have a list of to-dos, a list of books to read, or movies to see. I have a list of games to beat. Geeks are cool, too... right?

If you haven't already assumed, I play a lot of games. Board games, video games, card games... I love gaming. I love the interaction with others it brings; I love the way it allows us to drift off into a fantasy world and forget the horrors of cubical life or nagging relatives for a brief moment in time. Gaming plays a huge role in my life, and surprisingly, I have games to thank for the best friends I've made in my short lifetime.

Unfortunately, games don't seem to love me back (especially when I find myself screaming at the television when playing Mega Man II, which seemed so much easier when I was six). In fact, most gamers don't, either.

The video gaming world, much like the rest of it, is rather biased toward a certain demographic: the heterosexual. Not only do video games not have content appealing toward my particular sexual preference, gamers also tend to not be very welcome to those of us who are open about our sexuality. Often, we get compared to female gamers, who stereotypically are "less skilled" and "not as hardcore" at gaming than men are (which, from personal experience, is incredibly false. I've had my arm bludgeoned by a GameCube controller-wielding madwoman during a game of Mario Party. Seemed pretty hardcore to me), and get shunned and flamed from all directions. Getting called a fag in a match of League of Legends, for instance, prompts me to respond with "Why yes. Yes, I am.", leading to an onslaught of anti-gay slander. Lovely, huh? Now, I'm not saying that all gamers are like that, but... the vast majority, at least. For sure.

Rant aside, gay nerds exist. We love techy stuff, we loves games, anime, and whatnot. And you know what? We're no lesser than the lot of ya! I'm here to prove that yeah, just because I love the color pink, worship Lady Gaga as if she were a goddess and believe Princess Peach should be the star of her own video game series, it doesn't mean I'm not a "real" gamer.

So yeah. It begins. I hope you all enjoy my gaming misadventures as much as I'll have fun ranting about them.
